Grab Some Popcorn and Watch a Movie!

One of the challenges for today’s agricultural educators is to help consumers understand just how difficult it is to put food on their tables and clothes in their closets!  University of California colleagues, Alison Van Eenennaam and Peggy Lemaux (a RiceCAP PI), decided to try to address this issue by creating a 30-minute, peer-reviewed documentary called, "Cornucopia's Challenge".   In this video, they try to entertain as well as educate consumers by following the journey of three crops - corn, cotton and ­ most importantly to you ­ rice, from seed to market.   A variety of methods are discussed that farmers use to meet the challenges of growing, segregating, and marketing these crops to meet differing market requirements and consumer preferences.

So grab a bag of popcorn (or maybe a bowl of rice) and spend a quality half-hour watching the video!   It is streamed for viewing in the Resources section of www.ucbiotech.org. Diversity Display (for loan)

Modularized display focuses on the importance of plant variation to the future of foods and how and why plants have changed over time. Composed of tactile, visually attractive interchangeable modules, such as "Plant Breeding: The Path Forward" (specifically focused at Rice CAP), "Marker Assisted Selection", "Rice: From the Field to the Table", and "Why Is Genetic Diversity So Important to Tomorrow's Foods". Do you have a field day where you want to talk about RiceCAP?   The Outreach Team recently developed a colorful, laminated flip chart, in .pdf format, that is perfect for field presentations.  It has ten modules, each with a message about some aspect of RiceCAP, including the problems being addressed, why new approaches are needed, how breeders use marker assisted selection and what DNA is.   Rick Cartwright is using the flip chart in his outreach efforts and it is available from Rick for others to use. 

A downloadable poster based on the flip chart is also available in a downloadable PDF format (see below).
